I've had this cropped angora sweater sitting in my closet for a while. I found at Luxe De Ville awhile back along with the tribal puff-sleeved blouse I posted a few months ago.

My favorite part are the cute little bell sleeves!

The somewhat Christmas-colored background was unintentional, but I like it. Wearing vintage sweater, Rogan trousers, vintage lucite bangles, Rayban sunglasses, Louboutin Pigalle pumps (promise to stop wearing them soon... they just go with everything), and OPI Glitzerland nail polish.

I received these jeans as a gift from my friend Marijera in Tokyo. I first thought they were going to be too tight, but they fit perfectly and are actually really comfortable. (the best other thing, is that I also got silver ones!) I found these boots at my mom's closet recently, and have been wearing them lately. The heel is not too high, hence perfect for walking.

I wrote about Paz aka "Pacita" before. A close family friend (almost granny's cousin), she gifted me her old sewing machine. My great-grandma taught her to sew, and the student surpassed the master. She was the shizzle, a bias cutting master! All the socialites of her time lined up outside her workshop with loads of fabric. It feels so surreal to even type this, but Pacita passed away a few months ago, and I was handed down many of her sewing supplies and half-finished projects.

She kept her things neatly in whisky tin boxes. Whisky. How cool is that?!

Tons of lace and trimmings. SO. FRIGGIN'. PRETTY.

Catalogues with plenty of funny looking haircuts and vintage inspiration. Strips of fabric are still stapled to whatever style her clients were asking for. So much fun to see!

I'm thinking A.Wang (mostly SS'10) with all these sporty silhouettes. Suddenly I'm in the mood for some mesh!

A stack of vintage fabrics with abundance of texture and shine, my cup of tea. Spot Chloe Sevigny? I'm in love with the woman.

I thought I'd never dare use these precious heirlooms, but I think it's about time I make justice to her legacy! Wish me luck, I 'll need it. I will miss Pacita with all my heart and really appreciate all these wonderful things she's left me. I'll make sure to post about what I come up with. :)

Goodyn Green is a photographer who has recently self-published her first photobook, The Catalog, a collection of female nudes featuring queer women whose poses reference gay men's magazines. Here she is in Kreuzberg's The Fab Lab, where her photos are currently on display. A short interview follows, along with some of her work, which is probably NSFW (depending on where you work, that is).

DN: How did you start this project?

GG: I was in Barcelona about 2-and-a-half years ago, looking for inspiration for photography. I came across this gay men's magazine called Kink, which I really loved. But when I saw the lesbian version that they made, Marikink, I got so provoked by the photography. The photographers were the same as the men's version -- two male gay photographers. It was mostly just women with long hair in the forest, this typical female tenderness that is so often shown when referring to female sexuality. So that made me want to start something similar to Marikink, but for queer women. And specifically on androgynous looking queer women, because those are the ones that turn me on.

DN: Where did you find your subjects?

GG: I shot in different cities. There are four models from Paris, one from London, one in New York, and a couple from Denmark, and friends from Berlin as well.

DN: Did you find there was a difference between Berlin's queer scene and the other cities you went to?

GG: Berlin is so political -- there's a big focus on not copying these stereotypical gender roles within the queer scene. Even as a homosexual man here, there is a tendency to deny these roles. The Parisian scene is very different from Berlin, for instance. In Paris there's a big femme scene, and a big butch scene, but they are still playing these roles, albeit exaggerated. To me that's something that I never fit into.

DN: Why do you think that Berlin has developed such a unique queer scene?

GG: I think it has a lot to do with it being so left-wing oriented. Berlin has a huge anarchist scene which doesn't exist in other cities anymore. The anarchist scenes are such smaller there, and also less well spread out. In Berlin you even have a specifically queer-anarchist scene, which is independent from the anarchists. So this leads to a bit of a reputation internationally, and you get queer people coming from all over, which makes the it even stronger.

DN: So do you see this as being a lesbian project, or a queer one? Or do the two have to be mutually exclusive?

GG: The word lesbian has been kind of taboo in the queer circles. I'm not afraid of using the word lesbian anymore, but I think mostly I refer to queer women. The difference is that queer women want to expose themselves and show they have a strong sexuality. Some lesbians would be provoked by my photography and find it unappealing. This is the audience that Marikink is speaking to, a more mainstream lesbian audience.

DN: What's your next project after this?

GG: I have a new project at the moment; People who mainly identify as women, but who are being mistaken as another gender. But The Catalog might continue as an ongoing project. I'm definitely not done with these kind of photos.

For a few days now, I've been thinking, "I haven't heard Halestorm on the radio in a while." I'm a total car music junkie, so I've been meaning to buy their album sometime. I get a little crazy when I have my favorite music on. No hands, air guitar, singing really badly with the windows down.

Today, I was kind of glum, and then "It's Not You" came on WMMR! I was stoked, to say the least. By then, I was jamming in the parking lot of the nearest WalMart and thinking music is truly a gift. Lord knew I needed to hear an encouraging female voice today (and she's a sick guitarist too). Keep making music Lzzy!

The Jenifols x Maguen 11:11 part.2

Last 11/11 I was celebrating the important date with my friends from the uber cool label Maguen 11:11 . We all gathered in a well known club of Madrid were The Jenifols dj-ed after the live show. All my good mates came to show their support, such as Pelayo, Miranda (with her dad Sergio Makaroff in the picture), Miki&Bilbo, Fidel,Victor, Gerard(icanteachyouhowtodoit.com) who took all this pictures during the night, and we had the best of times! I wanted to thank Vega (my fellow blogger friend) for being the perfect host and making the party happen and getting all those famous faces to come down for the event, and Jack (director of Maguen) for looking after us and choosing us to play once again for his party. Interview: Mark Reeder

A little bit of research into Berlin's music history, and Mark Reeder's name will probably appear. Since moving to Berlin from Manchester in 1978, he has worked as Germany's rep for Factory Records, toured with New Order, managed Malaria!, organized the first secret punk rock show in East Berlin, was certified 'subversive' by the Stasi, and produced the last record ever produced in East Germany (which was also the only record ever made by an Englishman in the DDR). And that was just before the wall came down. Since then, he was the one to discover Paul van Dyk in 1990, and sign him to his record label MFS, which was also responsible for coining the term 'trance music.' On top of that, he was also in his own band Die Unbekannten (later Shark Vegas), which has since developed its own cult status. I sat down with Mark, and after a few hours talking, hadn't even gotten past 1990. So get your Sunday coffee and prepare for a long but fascinating account of 80s underground music culture in Berlin, both East and West.

DN: How did you end up coming to Berlin in 1978?

MR: It was just a whim. Manchester was a pretty desperate place in the 70s. The prospects weren't looking so good. As it was getting towards the end of 1977, I was seeing the fire being burned out by so-called New Wave, which was rock music being disguised as something new. For instance Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers was just a normal pub band. I saw things going another way, and I wasn't very interested in it. I'd been interested in electronic music for quite a long time, and there was very little of it in the UK. Everything was coming from Germany. So I went to Germany to see if I could find it.

DN: So what did you find?

MR: I didn't. I got Edgar Froese's address in Schöneberg and I went and knocked on his door. I don't know why. But I thought if "I'm here, I might as well say hello." And his wife opened the door and said "He's not here, he's in England." So I never actually met him til years later. But after living here, I found that Berlin that was developing it's own little music scene.

DN: Was it different than what you left in England?

MR: It had the same kind of energy as England, but a different mentality. In England, everybody wanted to make a hit record and sell millions, whereas in Berlin they wanted to make a record and express themselves. It was very refreshing. It wasn't driven by commerciality, it was driven by artistic expression. Certainly there were bands who, later on, wanted to become popstars. But bands like Mania D and P1/E made really different records. The records still sound refreshing today. I just wanted to find out more, and find more people making this kind of stuff.

DN: Where was the scene located then?

MR: The clubs were SO36 and Exxess. SO36 was always a real dive, and still is. Exxess is now a gay sauna on Kurfürstenstraße. It kind of looked like the "Bela Lugosi's Dead" video that was used at the beginning of The Hunger with David Bowie & Catherine Deneuve.

DN: You also worked as the German representative for Factory Records. How did this come about?

MR: Tony Wilson and Rob Gretton from Factory had sort of designated me as the German representative. It had just started, sort there were just one or two releases, but since I was in Germany, it made sense for me to promote whatever it was they planned on doing. I worked with Factory til 83, just before they released Blue Monday. I knew it was something I couldn't handle. The idea had been that I start Factory Germany, but they weren't prepared to give any money to do it. They wanted me to pay for it, and if it worked they'd get all the money, and if it didn't it would be on my back.

But generally, the myth of the label was much bigger than what happened. The label made a loss on every single record they released. They made a loss on Blue Monday, which was the biggest selling 12" ever, and still is today. Financially, Factory was a total disaster. They did make money, but it was all squandered on ridiculous things. There were studio sessions in the Bahamas for records which were never produced, and Peter Saville making a record cover would take months of design, and the cost of the record cover would be more than the cost of the record. So all this kind of crippled the label. It was very nice to look at and great to collect, but as a business enterprise it was a real disaster.

DN: How did you start performing here?

MR: I played a gig at the last night of the Excess Club, on Dec. 31 1980. Everybody who did it was in a band. I was asked as the rep from Factory Germany to do a couple of songs. They knew I'd played in a band before, so they asked me to just come up with something. I asked a friend of mine who was a drummer, Thomas Wydler, who is now with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and we wrote a song. It was actually a completely stupid song, but the organizer of the night thought it was really good. He must have been really drunk. So he asked if we'd perform again at this Konzert zur Einheit der Nation, on the 17th of June, 1981, at SO36.

A couple of months after the first gig, I bumped into Alistair, who I'd met a few years earlier but not seen since then. We started chatting and I told him I had a gig coming up and asked him if he could sing. So he immediately crooned "Strangers In The Night," and I said "Brilliant, you've got a gig." So I invited him over to my flat, I taught him how to play the bass, and we wrote a few songs. The show was a disaster. I had tuned my guitar backstage, where it was much cooler, and when I went out to the stage, it was a million degrees due to all the lights, so my guitar immediately went out of tune. Then I switched the wrong program on the drum machine, so it was playing something completely different. We had no idea what we were supposed to playing. But people thought it was some sort of avant-garde thing, playing against the rhythm kind of set. So much so, that the woman who owned Monogam Records, Elisabeth, thought it was fantastic and released our first two records as Die Unbekannten.

DN: What was it like as a foreigner here in the 70s and 80s? I imagine there weren't as many as there are today.

MR: There were foreigners here, obviously. But Alistair, myself, and two guys called Trevor and Piers, who played in a band called White Russia -- we were the only English people who got involved in this little scene here. Everyone else was Germans, and they were only really interested in what they were doing.

DN: Was there a difference between the music they were making and what you and Alistair were doing with Die Unbekannten?

MR: For sure. We come from a different school, a different musical upbringing. The way we wrote our songs was really British. It wasn't like the way Mania D wrote their songs, for example. And of course our lyrics were in English. We were considered insider outsiders. Being inside this scene, and accepted for that, but also something quite outside, as we were very English.

DN: In 1982 you also organized a secret concert disguised as a religious service by Die Toten Hosen in East Berlin, which was the first concert by a western punk band in East Berlin. What was the connection to East Berlin?

MR: I had met some people in East Berlin years before; I went over there quite often. They were fans of John Peel and Factory. They wanted to listen to alternative music which they couldn't buy in their local record shop.

DN: Why wasn't punk allowed in East Germany?

MR: It officially didn't exist even. It was seen as a throwback to capitalist society. Punk rock equaled unemployment, and in the Arbeiter-und-Bauern-Staat, there's no such thing as unemployment. Even if you didn't do anything at your job, you had to have one. For something like punk rock to exist in East Germany, it meant a failing of their system. So that's why they removed anything that's to do with punk rock. New wave eventually became a more acceptable term, but that's because it was new wave, and not punk. Punk being a revolutionary kind of sound, and new wave.

DN: How did they get to know that this type of music existed in the first place then?

MR: They taped it off the radio, or got people to bring cassettes over, or records if they were lucky. Most of the time John Peel played music you couldn't buy anywhere anyway. But the John Peel Show was like this religious service they heard every week. They heard it from the radio, through the BBC world service, and on the British forces radio. So they got a double dose every week. They would sit their with their cassette players and record everything on the show. On that show they would hear music that they would never get to hear again.

DN: So how did you meet these people?

MR: I saw this one kid once on the U-Bahn when I was in East Berlin who looked a bit punky, but like a nice punk, not like punk rock's image is today. He just had a bit of spiky hair and drainpipe trousers on, but that was radical enough in East Berlin at that time. He obviously had this passion for this type of music, so when he got off the train, I just followed him and asked him about the underground scene in East Berlin. "I bet he knows where there's a gig tonight," I thought. He said "there are no gigs, there's no subculture here at all." So I told him to let me know if something's happening ever. I gave him my address, and a couple of weeks later I got a letter from this girl who said "I'm interested in this music, I'd like to meet you." Basically they wanted to see who I was and figure out what it was I wanted. So they set up this meeting in the Palast der Republik. In the cafe there was big beautiful round bar, where you could have all these obscure East German cocktails. So we sat there and had a lengthy chat about music, and I discovered a lot of things through her.

DN: What kind of scene was happening in East Berlin?

MR: There was no real punk rock scene there at all at the time. There was just a small group of kids who would get together and listen to John Peel and dream about Depeche Mode. So I thought, "there's something there." I had heard about what was known as a Blues Messe, like a Blues Mass, in this church in Rummelsburg. So I went to see this priest, and asked if it was possible if I brought a band over from the West. He didn't see how we could do it, as we of course couldn't bring our instruments over; The border wouldn't let us. But we arranged to borrow the instruments from people living within the East.

An electric guitar was something that was out of the reach for an average East German to own, but we somehow arranged to get all the instruments together. We found people who knew people who knew someone else. In East Germany, you had to go through a process to get permission to play in front of an audience. It was kind of a group of men in brown suits who would watch you and judge if you were proficient enough, what your lyrics were like, what your music is like. It was a huge process just to determine if you were worthy of a piece of paper which would allow you to buy an electric guitar. These people that we eventually found with the equipment, they ended up becoming Rammstein years later.

DN: How did the gig go?

MR: When the day came, I said to Die Toten Hosen, "We'll go over in threes, you don't know anybody, you're just coming as a tourist. And if anybody didn't get in, the show is canceled." We made it through and went to the Blues Messe. We had to do a bit of praying, and then they could play. It was really emotional. It drove me to tears, to see that we pulled this off. This gig for these kids who would normally never have this opportunity to see this band in their life. That we managed to pull this off, and go against the authorities and have this band play in this place.

DN: And they never found out?

MR: Later on, when I got to see my Stasi file, I learned that from the very first encounter I had with this kid on the U-Bahn, he actually was an Inoffiziele Mitarbeiter for the Stasi. And at that gig, there were also kids who were spying for the Stasi. They had to, due to the activities they'd been involved in previously, in trying to be a punk in East Berlin. It was not an easy task. You weren't even allowed to look like a punk. If you went anywhere near Alexanderplatz looking like a punk, you were immediately removed. I met kids who were arrested and carted off and given an Alexanderplatz-verbot just for wearing a spiky armband.

DN: Why Alexanderplatz in particular?

MR: Because it was the main focal point for all the tourists. Any Western tourist would go to see the TV tower, and even the East German tourists visiting Berlin would go there. So they certainly didn't want any East Germans to see punk rock in East Germany. There were huge cameras all around Alexanderplatz, so they could see anything that was going on. That atmosphere was obviously quite oppressive.

DN: So why did they let you in the country if they had a file on you and knew what you were doing?

MR: They were very interested in what I was doing. I was classed as subversive, out to corrupt the youth of East Germany. The Stasi thought I was trying to infiltrate the political underground, because when I had this first encounter on the U-Bahn and asked for the underground, they thought I was referring to the political underground. They had no idea that such a thing as a music underground could even exist. Obviously they were very interested in my activities, and that's why I was never stopped going over, because they wanted to find out who and where and what I was doing, to try and draw something together. I only found this out later, when I saw my Stasi file.

DN: Did a punk rock underground ever emerge in East Berlin?

MR: Of course, more and more. But it was a real fight. It was very politically driven, in a different sense than it was in England. In England it was seen as sort of a fashion thing, but in East Germany the whole momentum behind it was freedom of speech.

DN: Do you think that this connection between the underground and politics has changed? Is there such a thing as an underground anymore even?

MR: There's too many different opportunities today for an underground like there used to be to exist. It had something to do with buying records I think. Today you don't ever have to buy music, so it has no value any more. Now, the only value is in being elitist enough to have something which is new that you think everybody should be listening to. But in the 80s, when you had to buy music, it had a greater value. A group would have to get so far as to actually make a record. Today music is just a throwaway. The value of music has changed, and the meaning of having a musical revolution has changed with it.
Music is all over the place today. It used to be a political expression, as well as a generational expression. It expressed a radical change in people's mentality. That's a bit confused these days. There isn't an apparent statement in music today. It's there, but it's not apparent. For that to arrive again, I think we'd have to have a lot of hardcore political changes happening.

Mark Reeder will be releasing a new album in the next week, "Five Point One," which features a selection of his remixes. A rare Shark Vegas track has also recently been re-released on Strut Records' Fac.Dance compilation.

The Things I Saw Today

Here are somethings that I saw while out on an Saturday afternoon walk with the fam. (Thank god, they were super patient this afternoon).

I've had my eyes on these Miu Miu wedges for a while. I love the silhouette and the cipria color.

I popped into Celine to pick-up a trio for my best friend and discovered these new colors. I'm dying for them all! The trio has truly become my favorite bag. I rarely leave home without my wine color one.

I've never tried on the Cartier Love Bracelet so thought it would be a perfect moment to do so given my husband and son's unusual patience. I fell in love when I put it on.

I am an absolute sucker for impulse merchandise. I spotted this Ogami Collections Taccuino notebook at the cash register of the art store where we were picking up materials for our DIY holiday decorations. The line made from Repap includes four different quotes including the one shown here. I think this would be the perfect Holiday present for that loved one with an ironic sense of humor.

Interview: Marie Losier

Marie Losier is a French-born, New York-based filmmaker, whose film "The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye" follows the love story between Industrial music legend Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and Lady Jaye. The film won the Teddy Award for Best Documentary feature at the past Berlinale, as well as the 2011 Caligari Prize. Marie is currently on tour with the film throughout Germany, and is screening here in Berlin for the next weeks at fsk.

DN: How did you decide on making a film about Genesis and Lady Jaye?

ML: It wasn't really a decision. They chose me more than I chose them. I knew nothing about Genesis or her music. I went to an Alan Vega concert at The Knitting Factory in Downtown Manhattan, and the third part of the concert was Thee Majesty [P-Orridge's spoken word-based project]. I was really disappointed with the Alan Vega show, but I was totally taken by the weirdness of the third part with Gen. So I left the concert moved, but still not knowing who this character was.

The next day I ended up at a gallery opening, and I accidentally stepped on someone's foot. I turned around to excuse myself and it was Genesis. So I told her how much I loved the concert, and she was smiling at me the whole time with all her gold teeth. We talked very simply for 10 minutes and something really beautiful passed between us. When she had to leave she gave me her card, and when I wrote to her she invited me to her house, saying she wanted to see me. So I went.

DN: And what happened when you got there?

ML: Lady Jaye was at the door to greet me and brought me coffee and they sat me down on this huge plastic chair in the shape of a hand. It was a really strange setting, down in the basement with all the archives and crosses and gold glitter balls. We talked very shortly and Jayesuddenly said "You're the one." I didn't know what she was talking about so I asked what she meant, and she said "The one who can film us."

DN: So what did they want you to film exactly?

ML: Jaye and Gen were precise in the sense that they just wanted someone to film their project, which was pandrogeny. I had no idea what that was at all, and they didn't explain it either. The way the three of us were, everything was so instinctive. We never asked each other questions. I just felt the energy and filmed what I thought was secretly beautiful or strange. I had no direction, because I don't write anything, so it was just a series of moments. But when I came back to New York, that's when I spent time in their home, and where I really understood what was going on. I started to see it more as a love project, so I began to focus more on the love story. I was never interested in filming any of the surgery.

I would up going on tour with them one week later through Europe. At first I thought it would be a music documentary, which at the time I guess it was. I just filmed backstage, recording the ambience. I was shy at first. They'd never been filmed before, and they didn't know me, so they were really testing me to see who I was.

DN: Much of the footage in the film is so intimate, like home movies. How much time would you spend with them?

ML: I work full time, so I would often come in the evenings or on weekends to their house. I never changed their routine. I just followed them around in their daily activities, walking the dog, getting groceries… As I started to develop some depth about where the film was going, I started to record the stories they'd already told me many times. I started constructing scenes based on the stories, little tableau vivants. That's where the little surreal moments of the film come in. I would make Gen dress up as a bird or in some other ridiculous outfit. I would set up these scenes and they would never ask why.

DN: The film is much more than a documentation about pandrogeny. You focus very little on the surgical end of it.

ML: I wasn't interested in the surgery aspect, but rather as the concept as a way of living. What I saw was more about an incredible love, rather than a conceptual piece about pandrogeny. When Lady Jaye passed away, I thought it was the end of the film. I didn't want to intrude. She was completely devastated, and she still is. That's why she still says 'we,' because Jaye is still there. The experiment keeps going.

DN: I also noticed that most of the scenes focus a lot more on Genesis than Lady Jaye, with the entire narration by Genesis.

Some people ask me why Jaye isn't more present in the film, but that's because her nature wasn't so much to be in front of the camera. To me she's very much there. She was that person who was mysterious and absent and present at the same time. So in a way, her absence makes her more present.

DN: The tableau vivant scenes really reminded me of Guy Maddin, who you've also worked together with. Were you influenced by him as you developed these scenes?

ML: I really didn't think of Guy. What we share is our use of super 8 and superimposition, and our love of silent film, especially it's humour. But he's never done non-fiction. Even his documentary My Winnipeg is very much fiction. And with Gen and Jaye there was a lot more straight story.

DN: What about your other work with Genesis? I see in your filmography that there are a few shorts featuring her.

ML: The other films were shot during those years, for a solo exhibition. I wanted to use the subjects I was working with at the time, but go further into what I love, which is objects of cinema. So I made these viewing objects which allow you to see film differently. I built an old magic lantern and a Scopitone machine, which were like the first music videos, only with film. So I built the machine and then directed a music video with Gen and her friends.

DN: Why the use of such old technology?

ML: The first camera I was given was my Bolex, so it's the way I've always worked. I'm not against digital film, but with film I love the fact that you don't see what you're filming. The film rolls only hold three minutes of footage, so you have to work differently. And you can do a lot of effects physcially with the camera that you can't with video. Video freaks me out because you can film forever. My approach to characters and personalities gives very different results because there is no sound recorded at the same time. The subjects are much less self conscious. They almost forget I'm there. I'm also very attached to the 70s look. The texture and the feeling of film is important to me. I was a painter before, so film is kind of a different medium of painting, but in movement.

DN: You're going on tour through Germany with the film. What's the connection with Germany?

ML: Stefanie Schulte Strathaus [the curator of Arsenal and programmer for Berlinale Forum Expanded] was the first person to show my shorts, as part of the Berlinale. That changed my life completely in terms of film. My work started to be taken seriously. Shes followed the project about Gen for 7 years, so for me Berlin is really important. I also won the Caligari award, which as part of the deal includes the film tour through Germany.

DN: There are a few filmmakers who've migrated to Berlin to work. Would you consider moving away from New York?

ML: It's the first time I've questioned living in New York. I work full time and it's very difficult. I program all the films at the French Institute, and it's very intense to do that and be a full-time filmmaker. I've never had the luxury and the chance to just work on film, so I'm thinking of moving for the first time to a cheaper place to have time to write grants and work just as a filmmaker.

I was saving this beautiful dress to shoot it before using it in an actual event, but in the day of the Versace for H&M

show, though I had a completely different outfit planned, I saw it glowing in the luggage and figured out it was what I needed for the glamorous night. And it was worth it.

It is a Roberto Cavalli dress I saw for the first time shot in Daria Werbowy for Vogue Paris a few seasons ago, and that I couldn't resist of getting as soon as I tried it on( or actually a soon as I recognized it from that great editorial). I don't think I had seen before that an animal print worked so well in sequins. I also am enamored by the mermaid shape, the fact that gently shows your legs when you walk, and the uncovered back.

I've mentioned the lack of fabric choices in La Ceiba that leads to silly things like this, so once again I fell for a utility fabric with a funky print used for...TADADAAA...baby blankets!

The texture is kinda cool, it promotes safety driving and has tinyLondon buses all over so t'was a keeper. Made a pattern for the "petal" skirt before cutting (I'm not a gifted cut-and-voilà type of seamstress, dangit), and I think it turned out okay.

I don't really fancy T-shirts or anything jersey, but I guess they're a must-have for lazy days. I did like the cut & color of this one and it was really cheap, but the Snoopy print on the front was a wee bit too much, even for me. I figured I'd go Rei Kawakubo on it and wear it inside out, serged seams shining in all their mass produced glory.

My dear friend Hanneli and I were featured in Vogue.com's The Social Shopper this weekend. The feature was inspired by an image taken by another dear friend, Jason Jean of the lovely blog Citizen Couture. In the pic, Hanneli and I wear similar orange sweaters. Totally not planned and a fun surprise when we bumped into each other at the Tuileries in Paris, this coincidence is emblematic of the fashion relationship that friends develop over time. Like the Vogue.com piece states, "Spend enough time together and you’re sure to start finding inspiration in each other’s closets and—consciously or not—your looks will begin to morph." This is totally true, and what a better inspiration to have than the super stylish Hanneli.

Seeing the feature was an amazing way to start a beautiful Saturday. Thanks to Meredith Melling Burke and the lovely editors over at Vogue.com.

When I asked her about her inspiration for this look, she shared:
"You can't let anyone know what you're thinking. This is fierce from the front and it's fun, little more feminine when you turn around-- I love how Zac did shirring and ombre from tan to grey at the back of the skirt. PS- the lady next to me looks far cooler."

I couldn't agree more with Stephanie. I love a little mystery when it comes to fashion. I adore guessing a style inspirations next step, and I am seriously inspired by spontaneity in one's style (all traits for which Stephanie is admired).

It's looks like Jane's that get me up at 7 in the morning thinking of how I can get my hands on a particular item of clothing. I love her sweat shirt-plus-pleated leather skirt mix. As you may know, I'm very partial to chic sweatshirts. I have a really amazing Acne grey one that I wear all the time. But, it's really her leather skirt that has me strategically planning out my morning shopping. You see, I saw a gorgeous leather pleated Prada skirt at the beginning of the season that I painfully left on the rack. BUT now, I have a fun party this afternoon in Alba in Piedmont. All families, a billion babies, plus it's super chilly in the region this time of year. Jane's look is absolutely the perfect solution. Sporty chic top on top (good for running after four-year-old with intentions of destroying hostess's contemporary art installations); sleek, posh bottom for dual purpose of (1) impressing the other chic moms and (2) the just-above-the knee length will allow me to elegantly bend down to clean up the inevitable spilled cup of water. Hmm, hope that skirt is still there. Going to make a cup of coffee now. I've got a lot to do this morning.

I love taking couple photos on the street, something about people who complements each other well translates so well in a photo to me. However, when they asked me to follow them into this back alley I was a bit concerned for my safety. That being said, since I ask strangers for their trust in me each time I snap a photo, I figured it was my turn to say yes. Well worth the walk away from sidewalk.

I was lately obsessed about finding these velvet wide leg trousers from the Fall 2006 Roberto Cavalli collection.
The finest velvet fabric, the printed gold birds and the color all together remind me of something linked with renaissance royalty clothes. I love that it is such a luxurious touch, transformed into wide leg pants.
I feel really excited to shoot them at night too, they have a special and enchanting glow in the dark.

Studio Visits - Tony Marcus Sacharias

Some time ago we started the Studio Visits. The first in the series was a visit to the studio of Sober, for the second installment we would like to introduce you to Tony Marcus Sacharias. We hope you enjoy and it won't take just as long until the next!

Tony Marcus Sacharias (1980) is a conceptual fashion-designer who originates from Drenthe, a province in the North-East of the Netherlands. In 2010 he graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Tony first caught our eye during Amsterdam International Fashion Week S/S 2012, where he presented his collection, ‘Marked by life’.
At the moment his studio is situated in his home a bit outside the centre of Amsterdam. Arriving at his studio and stepping inside the hall of the apartment our gaze is attracted by the focused room. The first part of the space presents a cosy living room with two couches and a small table in front of a television. The second part is divided from the first by a wardrobe with Tony’s latest collection and has a functional and tidy studio atmosphere. Bookshelves and pictures of his work in progress are arranged around a huge white table. General fashion books and other more specific art books are presented on white shelves. We spot books on Lucian Freud, Cindy Sherman and Egon Schiele, these hint to the designers inspirations for his collections.

Please tell us a bit about yourself, your background, and how you got into fashion?
I´m the youngest in our family of four, as a child I created my own world by making drawings. When I grew up I focused a lot on different hand crafts like embroidery and knitting. After high school it was clear to me that I wanted to do something creative and I decided to go to the Grafisch Lyceum in Zwolle.
After some years I wasn’t quite happy with the decision I made, then I moved to Amsterdam and did some interviews with different academies. I already had decided to do fashion, so after doing interviews with Artez and Amfi and Gerrit Rietveld Academy, in the end I chose the Rietveld. It felt like home, the whole atmosphere and the students and teachers.
I started in the preparatory course, then the basic year, a year of exploring and searching. It was really exciting using different media to make and present my work, like drawing, sculpture and film. Because of this I was doubting to do fashion or not, but in the end it was still clear my work was body conscious. That’s what I like about the Rietveld, it doesn’t matter which department you choose, you can give your own interpretation on what you do. I really wanted to develop myself as a kind of artist at the fashion department. The conceptual part was really important for me and the teachers gave me the opportunity to figure this out, which was great.
Before I started my exam collection, I did an internship with Orson+Bodil. It was a period where a learnt a lot. And like the Rietveld, this atelier felt like home. Working one on one with Alexander van Slobbe taught me a lot of his workmanship and it gave me the opportunity to develop an accessory.

How did you approach your collection ‘Marked by life’? What was the starting point for the collection?
I used ‘ageing’ of people, to show the beauty of the ageing, so not the negative part of it. Each silhouette has two layers and I applied three different stages to show the changing of the body. In the first stage I took the details of what makes a garment a garment, like collars and pockets and cut them away, literally cut them out. In the second stage the fabric falls apart by taking away the threads and the second layer (lining) is visible and the seams are showing inside out. The third stage is the part where the body shrinks. So I use woven fabrics and a technique by pulling the threads.

What exactly interests you in the change of the physical body?
What I like about the physical body, is to show my thoughts, how I look at people and how people behave. I want to show people: think twice before you say something about yourself or talk about somebody else, about their physical form or whatever. That is my general concept. I made a women collection because I think that women are thinking more about ageing and beauty, they’re more conscious of it.

How important are the fabrics for the design? How do you choose the fabrics?
For this collection I decided that it should be skin tones, because of the human body. I wanted to have natural fabrics, like cotton and wool and woven fabrics. I chose my fabrics intuitively. I went to Boeken, I almost spent two or three hours a day there. I would go there and buy some fabrics and then I’d go home again. Then I maybe have three different fabrics and go there again and then again the next day. Then you see other fabrics and think: Huh, I didn’t see those yesterday. Suddenly by doing so I collected the fabrics for my collection.

What are you working on at the moment?
At the moment I am still figuring out which way I want to go. I feel I want to get more experience to build my own brand, but it is also important to develop my work. I want to launch my second collection in the summer again. By closing my collection S/S 2012 I will have a campaign shoot with Allard Honigh.

So you’re working on another summer collection. Is it a conscious decision to focus on summer clothes?
No, it is more a practical decision (laughs)... I already had a talk with program director (AIFW) Carlo Wijnands about participating in the winter edition in February, I knew that with this collection I started, four months, even three months before and that was way too short. I do everything by myself, I just had an intern for four months. But the decision I made is that I want to have more time to make a new collection and also to give it more time. I do not want to work with machines, but really want to use my hands, to make my own fabrics for example. It is not totally there yet, but I might launch something for the winter edition, but more in a smaller scale.

Do you believe in the fashion seasons?
That was the first thing that came to mind when I was asked for fashion week. I thought: Oh but it has to be a spring/summer collection... but if I use thick wool or fur, if the material fits into my concept, then I just do it. I think it is really important that you stick to your own way of thinking. I use the seasons more as a deadline. To know it has to be finished by then.

People
Family and Friends - especially my fiance and 2 best friends - but also musicians are really important to me like Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, Antony Hegarty.

My house/atelier is really important for me where I feel save. Amsterdam is where I feel free of thinking and moving. Besides Amsterdam, I find Paris one of the most inspiring places, the people, the architecture, art and fashion.
